It seemed like forever that Maddy had been sitting top her bed, waiting, wishing for something more worthwhile to happen. However, something inside her gave her the notion that nothing new or exciting would fill the emptiness she felt when the her brother left. Nothing would take charge of her weak heart and depressed mood and turn them both around, as she had a small glimmer of hope for such a thing. Still, she tossed and turned on the bed, unable to get comfortable with herself and with her surroundings. On a whim, she thought about getting up. Throwing her legs to the floor and lifting her midsection, she swiftly stood, bare-footed on the cold concrete floor, and she slid on some flat shoes and a jacket before slipping out of her room.
She was upset, having not heard from her brother by now. She expected something; after all, she was the closest to him. And he had promised her that he would send her something, anything, to let her know that he was okay. It was already a couple of months into the school year and there was still nothing. Sighing, she slid through the tower door and up two flights of stairs to the owlry. She was going to send him a letter and she could only hope for a response. Something to let her know that he was okay. She found a scrap piece of parchment lying at the door of the owlry and picked it up as she walked in. But, after opening it, she saw a name, her name. She read the note, from her brother finally, with tears almost in her eyes.
He didn't say much, but he was all right. That was what she needed to read. She found a nearby quill and scribbled a reply back on the parchment, letting Landon know she got his note. She signed it Len, a nickname he gave her from her middle name, Lennox, and sent it off with her barn owl Cooper.
Gasping softly, a very relieved sigh, she moved away from the window and propped herself against the back wall. Thank goodness for walls for support.
